Southampton City Council is spending more than £4 million a year on temporary accommodation.

This is due to a rise in the number of people living in provisional premises, which now stands at nearly 400.

Figures obtained by Personal Injury Claims UK revealed that, in 2023/24, 397 people were living in hotels and temporary accommodation in Southampton.

This is an increase from 324 in 2021/22, with a possible cause being attributed to the cost-of-living crisis.

Councillor Andrew Frampton, cabinet member for housing at Southampton City Council, said: "The UK housing emergency is devastating millions of lives.

"That is the human cost.

"Only through the building of social housing will we resolve this crisis that has been years in the making.

"The council will always help and assist families who are denied a safe and stable home."

Across the UK, the number of homeless people in local authority-provided temporary accommodation rose to record levels.
