Southampton Airport could take diversions today as Heathrow has closed for the day after a fire at a nearby electricity substation.

The Echo understands that AGS Airports - the company that runs Aberdeen, Glasgow and Southampton airstrips - will be liaising with air traffic control throughout the day about accepting any potential diverts.

At the time of publishing, no flights have been diverted to Southampton yet, and the Echo believes AGS will be in discussions to take diversions throughout the day.

National Air Traffic Services (NATS) provide air traffic control services across the UK and is based in Whiteley.

The company, which provides services to 14 UK airports, has said it is "working closely" with Heathrow and airlines to manage disruption caused today.

A spokesperson for NATS said: “We are working closely with Heathrow Airport and with airlines to manage the disruption caused by the closure of the airport today.

“We have well-rehearsed plans in place which includes a requirement for aircraft to either turn back or divert to a non-UK airport, as well as stopping other flights at their point of departure.

!This forms part of the aviation industry mass diversion plan and we have made clear to airlines that there is limited capacity at other UK airports to accommodate diversions.”

“Scheduled flights to other UK airports are not affected.”
