A step forward has been taken in the development of a new scheme that could see organisations charged for roadworks during peak times.
Southampton City Council wants to introduce a Lane Rental Scheme on major roads to reduce traffic delays and congestion.
Under the programme, all utility, developer, private, and Highway Authority works on a Lane Rental Road will attract a daily charge.
Roads in the scheme would include Millbrook Road West, Bassett Avenue, Thomas Lewis Way, Portsmouth Road and Bursledon Road.

This charge will initially cover the cost of setting up and running the scheme, with any additional funds allocated to highway maintenance.
Councillor Eammon Keogh, cabinet member for environment and transport, said: "Southampton is a vibrant and dynamic city, and we are committed to making it an even better place to work, live and visit.
"The Lane Rental Scheme is a fantastic initiative that will help reduce disruption caused by roadworks, ensuring smoother and more efficient travel for everyone."
The council hopes to submit the proposals to the Department for Transport by April 1.
