The next phase of a major £4.3m restoration project at Southampton City Art Gallery has begun, with the gradual reopening date for part of the building confirmed.
The first phase involved the installation of a large independent scaffolded roof system, covering the West Wing Galleries.
This allowed for the removal of the existing ventilation plant, asphalt roofing, and roof lights, while ensuring the safety of the gallery’s art collection.
Upgrades also included insulated asphalt roofing, the conservation of double-glazed roof lights, and a new air-conditioning system.

A sustainable ventilation system, integrated with the city's geothermal infrastructure, has also been created.
With the West Wing phase is nearing completion, the section of the gallery will begin to gradually reopen from April 5.
The gallery closed on February 22 and refurbishment will now commence on the main and East Wing.
These parts are expected to reopen in early 2026.
The project is supported by a £2.23m grant from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport’s Museum Estate and Development Fund.
