Tributes have been paid to a "kind, caring and loving man" who was killed in a crash on his way to work.

Southampton-born Josh Longman, 20, was travelling to Hythe when his silver-coloured Ford Fiesta spun out of control and hit a van coming in the opposite direction.

Mr Longman suffered multiple injuries in the accident and is thought to have died almost instantly.

Speaking at an inquest into his death his mother, Kelly Longman, said: "Josh was a force to be reckoned with - he was a whirlwind from the day he arrived in this world.

"Twenty years was not enough time to be with my boy. He was kind, loyal, and hard-working.

"A world without Josh is so much less. We are left with so much love in our hearts, but nowhere for it to go."

Mr Longman, who lived at Jacobs Gutter Lane in Totton, was a teenage gymnast who went on to become a competition diver at The Quays in Southampton.

At the time of his death, he was a trainee boatbuilder who would have completed his apprenticeship this year.

Mr Longman is thought to have been exceeding the 40mph speed limit when the accident happened at Main Road, Dibden, just after 7.30am on November 29 2023.

But crash investigator Michael Toy said several "variables" meant it was impossible to establish how fast he was driving.

He added that the car had multiple defects including over-inflated tyres, which would have affected its handling and stability.

The accident happened on a narrow stretch of road near the entrance to Dibden Golf Centre.

In a written statement submitted to the inquest the van driver, Peter Gorse, said Mr Longman lost control on a bend, resulting in a crash that was virtually head-on.

He added: "There was nothing I could have done to avoid a collision. I had nowhere to go."

Mr Toy confirmed that Mr Gorse was subsequently found to have traces of cocaine and ketamine in his system.

But senior coroner Christopher Wilkinson said: "I don't think the presence of drugs more than minimally contributed to the incident."

Addressing the issue of how fast Mr Longman was driving, the coroner said he had overslept that morning, adding: "I suspect he was probably in a bit of a rush."

Mr Wilkinson recorded a conclusion that he died as a result of a road accident.

Turning to Mrs Longman, he said: "He was an intelligent, kind, and loving boy. There are so many things you should be proud of."
