The owner of a dog killed by e-bike rider has spoken out in hopes of saving “another life”, after the culprit “pulled up his hoodie and made a laughing sound”.

Julie Whitecross’ husband was out walking their Pomeranian dog Saffi at around 6.45pm on February 28 on Allotment Road in Sarisbury Green.

Heading down towards the woods on a dark footpath, Julie’s husband said he heard the whirring sound of an electric bike, before hearing a scream of pain from the dog.

“My husband picked her up and was rubbing her, she looked up at him and died in his arms,” Julie said.

“My husband shouted you’ve killed my dog. The guy pulled up his hoodie and made a laughing sound.

“All I know that is I had a happy health dog that bounced out of the house, and she came back dead,” Julie said.

After taking Saffi to the emergency vets, the doctor concluded that she had died, and told Julie that the Pomeranian had an “impact bruise” on her rear end.

The Sarisbury Green resident said that her husband blames himself, but that the e-bike rider could have hit any animal or any child.

“We don’t know where he’s bumped into her or kicked him as he’s gone past,” she said.

“It doesn’t matter if it’s a dog’s life, it’s still a life. She wasn’t just a dog, she was a family.”

Julie is now telling Saffi’s story in hopes of bringing awareness and hoping for change to be made.

She wants to see more lighting on the path way and action from police, as her husband has been left devastated by the incident.

“I’ve got on to the local MP, the footpath is so dark around there, it’s dangerous.

“It could’ve been a child, an elderly person, it’s bad enough to take my dog’s life but it could’ve been a human being.”

Hampshire police have since issued an appeal and are looking to hear from any witnesses who could help with the investigation.

The e-bike rider is described as being between 14 and 18 years old, white, of slim build, and wearing dark clothing.

Officers said: "Anyone with information is asked to call 101, quoting the reference number 44250095933."
