A new speed restriction will be enforced on part of the A34.

A 40mph limit will be added to a section of the A34 near Winchester, as announced by National Highways.

The restriction, which covers the southbound carriageway from around 50 metres south of the Springvale Road underbridge to the roundabout, will start on Saturday, April 19.

This decision comes as contractors prepare to carry out junction improvement works, with the restriction in place "in the interests of road safety".

On Thursday, it was announced that government ministers had approved new funding for the M3 Junction 9 scheme.

Backed by £290m of Government money it hopes that the scheme will hasten journeys, reduce the current bottleneck, and save commuters, businesses, and tourists hundreds of hours each week.

The order, originally made on February 27, is indefinite and will be lifted once the work is complete, in accordance with the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984.

The temporary restriction will be clearly marked by traffic signs when in operation.

The order is part of a series of measures being put in place to ensure safety and smooth operation during the improvement works.
