A resident of Sirdar Road for two years said he watched the action unfold and described the events as ‘like watching a police TV show’.
He said: “I had just parked my car and was walking up the front garden towards my front door when suddenly five police officers and a big dog jumped out of a vehicle and approached the door of the block of flats on Sirdar Road.
“I was quite shocked as the officers were carrying guns.
“Then, as police were approaching the flats, a car came reversing out from behind the block at a really high speed, while the offers were all shouting stop.
“The officers smashed the window and grabbed two men from inside the car.
“We have lived here for two years and I have never seen anything this shocking happen before.”
Residents react to the arrest
One resident of Sirdar Road said: “It was really scary seeing all of the police with guns in the road - it is not something you expect to see out your bedroom window.
“I’ve been in looking after my dogs, but there has been commotion around the flats all day."
The resident said that she heard rumours from a neighbour that somebody had been murdered - but a man is currently in hospital and his injuries are not thought to be life threatening.
As reported by the Echo earlier today, a police investigation has been launched after a man in his 30s was shot in Southampton on Thursday evening, March 13.
Officers were called at 10.08pm to a report that a man had been seriously assaulted at the junction of St Mark’s Road, Northbrook Road and Nichols Road.
A police van has now turned up onto Sirdar Road and the man in handcuffs is being put in the back of the van.
Incident connected with shooting
Hampshire Constabulary has confirmed that this afternoon's incident in Portswood is related to last night's shooting.
A spokesperson said that arrests have been made, and will provide more details ASAP.
