A police statement issued earlier today said: “As our investigation progresses today we are keen to hear from anyone was in the vicinity of Derby Road, St Mark’s Road, Northbrook Road or Nichols Road yesterday evening shortly after 10pm.

LDid you witness anything suspicious or out of place, or did you witness the assault itself, the moments leading up to it or the aftermath? Perhaps you were driving through the area and have dash cam that may have captured something.

“Anyone with any information that may assist our enquiries is asked to contact us on 101 quoting the reference number 44250111945.”

Linda Moore, 79, said “oh my gosh” when she heard that somebody had been shot in the area.

”I didn’t hear anything, I didn’t know anything until I got into my taxi to go into town this morning,” she said.

“I saw all the cars there and the driver said all the roads were shut around the back.”

Linda said you “don’t expect” things like this in the area.

“People don’t think we’re a good area, but in actual fact, there’s a lot of care in neighbours in the area.

“I don’t recall anything like this happening.”

12:22pm

A man told our reporter on the scene that “there’s more evil than good in the world today”, explaining that he was sad to hear that someone had been shot.

”There’s too many distractions today and what’s wrong always look like it’s right,” he said.

12:05pm

Two police vehicles have just left the scene as officers continue to patrol to speak to residents and monitor the cordon.

11:59am

A 54-year-old woman walking her dog raised her eyebrows in disbelief when she heard somebody had been shot.

“I’ve been here five years and that’s the first incident I’ve heard of someone being shot,” she said.

“You get a lot of rubbish round here.

“Not really any incidents, I live round the back so it’s quiet where I am. Rubbish is the main problem here really.”

11:51am

Officers are patrolling the area, walking down Derby Road to speak to any concerned residents.

11:51am

A father and son walking up Brintons Road to go shopping in the city centre told our reporter on the scene that it “doesn’t seem real” that someone was shot last night.

The 52-year-old father said that the area can have a bit of a “rough reputation” but that “guns would be a different line entirely”.

11:32am

A 62-year-old woman was visibly concerned when she learnt that a person was shot.

She shook her head and told our reporter on the scene: “After 9pm, my shift finishes at 9pm, I’m a worker in the hospital. When we finish there’s a lot of boys standing around, it’s scary for us.

“It’s scary sometimes at night. I reach the road for quarter to 10 and I just put my head down and walk past because we are scared.”

She also told of how she was once racially abused by drunk people on the street as she walked past Northbrook Road with her husband.

11:18am

Ray Winton, who lives on one of the roads connected to the crime scene closures, was shocked to hear the news.

He said it was “ridiculous” to think something like that could happen so close to his home.

He said: “If this did happen then you’d imagine we’d hear it happen. I’ve seen nothing on Facebook, nobody saying they’d heard something.”

11:08am

A Derby Road resident living just minutes away from the cordon said: “I haven’t heard anything, I’ve been up all night I haven’t sleep and I’ve been watching the internet.

“I just moved to this area and heard stuff like this has been happening.”

The resident told our reporter at the scene that this was the first he was hearing of the news.

The pedestrian left via the closure at Northbrook Road.

9:47am

A group of four or five police officers are speaking in the middle of the cordon as others continue to turn unaware drivers away.

9:39am

A Derby Road resident, who wished to remain unnamed, said: “I got home about 2am last night and I’m sure they weren’t there at that time, but maybe I missed it.”

The resident said that so many cars keep driving past their house and then have to turn around, waking them up in the process.

9:35am

Another police car has arrived at the scene at the junction between Britons Road and St Marks Road.

There is also no access to St Marks Road from Britons Road.

9:26am

Taxis and normal drivers keep turning around the sharp corner from Derby Road to Northbrook Road, before realising the path ahead is closed, and coming back around with a three point turn.

One 33-year-old taxi driver noted that the junction is “quite a blind corner” and that he “had to brake fast” when he saw the road was closed further along.
