The University of Southampton has been recognised as a University of Sanctuary.

The award, presented at a city centre event, acknowledges the university's commitment to creating a safe, inclusive environment for sanctuary seekers.

The institution has joined the Southampton Sanctuary Network, which includes Southampton Solent University, Southampton City Council, and City Life Church.

Paul Woodman, leader of City Life Church, presented the certification.

Professor Mark E. Smith, university vice chancellor, said: "I am very proud of the commitment we are making to support and improve the lives of students and academics from across the world who are seeking sanctuary."

Maryam Taher, Universities of Sanctuary manager, said: "We’re delighted to welcome the University of Southampton as a University of Sanctuary.

"This recognition highlights its commitment to creating a welcoming and supportive environment for those seeking safety."

The university's initiatives include a scholarship programme, a dedicated sanctuary coordinator role, and various student-led initiatives.
