A survey has revealed that one in five people are considering calling in sick after St Patrick's Day celebrations.

The survey, conducted by O'Neill's, asked more than 2,000 people about their plans for the day after the festivities.

Half of those who said they might call in sick admitted they would tell their bosses they were suffering from the effects of celebrating "an important cultural day."

St Patrick's Day takes place on Monday.

Some of the more creative excuses included "uncrossable puddles," "spacecraft landing on the driveway," and "birdfeeders crashing through windows."

Roisin Sherriff, marketing manager at O’Neill’s, said: "St Patrick’s Day is the biggest day of the year for us – and most of our guests.

"St Patrick’s might be on a Monday this year, but we know that won’t stop people having a good time."

The survey also found that 27 per cent of people will not be able to get out of bed the next day.
