She's the business owner set to celebrate 50 years of her family helping thousands of brides by moving to a bigger shop.

Shelley Jory-Leigh has combined life as a powerboat champion with continuing to run the business started by her mum and dad and employing her since she was just ten years old.

There are big plans for the 50th birthday of Brides of Southampton next year, but first it's a move to a new city centre shop by Christmas, leaving behind the Portswood premises which has housed the business since it began in 1976.

It will be a new start for Shelley and her staff, many of whom have worked for Brides for decades.

The business has outgrown its Portswood premises with a bigger, better and more luxurious showroom planned to suit the modern bride.

The new location will play host next year to an even more elaborate half century celebration than in 2016 when 40 brides took part in a huge fashion show, many of them recreating the opening of the shop by arriving in a horse and carriage.

By the age of ten, she was a Saturday girl and has never really looked back.

"I tried to do anything else," she laughed. "In the end, I was dragged into the business kicking and screaming!

"I'd been offered an amazing job with Saatchi and Saatchi in London and had to make a decision. I went into the business and the rest is history.

"It's such a contrast in my two worlds, overalls for powerboating and beautiful wedding dresses, but I love it."
