The world's first disabled-led youth orchestra is set to perform on the south coast this spring.

The National Open Youth Orchestra (NOYO) will play at Lighthouse, Poole, on May 10, as part of a UK-wide tour.

The orchestra, which features young musicians from Gosport and includes 16 disabled and non-disabled musicians aged between 11 and 25, will perform new music and pieces by Meredith Monk, Lucky Chops, and Kate Whitley.

NOYO was launched in 2018 as the world's first disabled-led youth ensemble.

Its musicians, who rehearse in regional ensembles across the UK, play a mix of acoustic and accessible electronic instruments.

Lilian Hopper, NOYO oboist, said: "NOYO is such a fun ensemble to play in, and I think that enjoyment really comes through in our concerts.

"We do a wide variety of music, and each piece is arranged to suit the orchestra, creating interesting new takes on existing songs."

Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra’s chief executive, Dougie Scarfe OBE, said: "What NOYO continues to achieve, in opening doors to the British music scene for a new generation of disabled people, is remarkable."

The Poole performance will be live-streamed and available to watch for 30 days.
