A Hampshire firefighter has reached the quarter-finals of a revived 90s game show on BBC One.

On Saturday, February 22, firefighter Andrew "Mitch" Mitchell was broadcast as one of four contenders in the latest episode of Gladiators.

Based at Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue in Winchester, Mitch took part in the filming of the revived game show in September, taking on the challenge of battling against the Gladiators.

He took on Steel, Apollo and Viper, and went into the eliminator with a one-second deficit to fellow competitor Nush.

But Mitch managed to claw the time back to make it through to the next round.

The 40-year-old from Bournemouth said: "Every member of the watch brings a special skill set to the job and I believe mine is my fitness and my strength.

"If we go into a house fire, I'm the one smashing the door down, squirting the wet stuff on the hot stuff. I'm the one who's getting the big, heavy hydraulic cutting tools and cutting cars up.

"I've been obsessed with fitness my whole entire life."

"To take on the Gladiators, for me, is going to be a walk in the park."

Mitch said: "Thank you so much. I genuinely underestimated how hard this is. I am absolutely knackered.

"That was incredible, it was hard work, and now I've got it all to come again."
