Roadworks are set to take place on Portswood Road for three days as Southern Water repair a water leak in the road.

Southern Water has confirmed a lane closure is in place on the road between the junctions with Brookvale Road and Westridge Road, while works take place, that began today (Wednesday, February 19).

A diversion is in place for southbound traffic via Saint Denys Road, Thomas Lewis Way, and Lodge Road.

From 8pm tonight a full lane closure will be in place on the road with temporary traffic lights in place to manage traffic flow.

Southern Water has confirmed the works are expected to last for “at least three days”, with the company apologising for any inconvenience caused.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Southern Water said: “Our teams have been working to repair a leak in a section of Portswood Road, Southampton, where we currently have a lane closure in place.

“We now need to fully close one lane southbound into the city, between the junctions with Brookvale Road and Westridge Road, with a diversion for southbound traffic via Saint Denys Road, Thomas Lewis Way, and Lodge Road.

“Traffic management will be in place from 8pm tonight (Wednesday, February 19). We expect the work to take at least three days to complete. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

Commenting on the road closure, Cllr John Savage, ward councillor for Portswood and cabinet member for green city and net zero, said the works “couldn’t have come at a worse time.”

Speaking to the Echo, he said: “I understand Southern Water need to do what they need to do but it couldn’t have come at a worse time.

“The Portswood Broadway scheme is ongoing at the moment meaning drivers can only access the road during set times and the works only complicate that.”

The busy road is shut to all vehicles except buses, taxis, and cyclists from Westridge Road to St Denys spur road for a six-month trial during peak hours.
