A Hampshire man has been arrested after allegedly “punching and kicking a woman.”

Police rushed to the incident at approximately 4pm on Tuesday at the junction of Grange Road and Privett Road in Gosport.

After arriving at the scene, officers located both a man and a woman, before tackling the man to the ground in order to control him after he was “verbally and physically abusive towards officers”.

Hampshire police confirmed a 43-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

The suspect was also arrested on suspicion of criminal damage to the woman's phone, assault on an emergency worker and criminal damage to a police van.

The woman involved in the incident and a police officer both suffered minor injuries.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary said: “You may have seen multiple police officers dealing with an incident at around 4pm on Tuesday, February 18, at the junction of Grange Road and Privett Road.

“It was reported to police that a man was seen punching and kicking a woman.

“Police have attended the scene and located both the man and the woman and attempted to speak to the man. The man was verbally and physically abusive towards the officers, so had to be taken to the ground in order to control him.

“A 43-year-old man from Gosport was arrested on suspicion of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, criminal damage to the woman's phone, assault on an emergency worker and criminal damage to a police van.

“The man has been transported to police custody. The woman sustained minor injuries. The police officer who was assaulted also had minor injuries and was able to continue his shift.”
