A DOG was killed after a car crashed into it – prompting anonymous “keyboard warriors” to launch attacks on the driver.

Rex was struck in Christchurch Road in New Milton on February 9 and, despite being taken to the vets by the police, later died.

New Forest police said a CCTV image of the vehicle involved was posted onto a Facebook residents’ group from a nearby business.

PCSO Alan took to social media and said it prompted “hidden keyboard warriors airing towards hatred of the driver... not knowing the facts”.

He said the driver feared for his and his family’s safety.

“I will be speaking with the business involved and educating them on their responsibility of adhering to General Data Protection Regulations,” PCSO Alan said.

“This was an unfortunate sequence of events and yes I understand that Rex at the time was not under proper control however he I know was a very energetic guy as I would regularly see him on my rounds in the rear garden jumping up and down however on this occasion he saw the chance and took it.

“So to this end and on crossing Rainbow Bridge I say on behalf of Rex’s family good night young man have a safe journey and mind how you go.”
