MEET the environmentally friendly gardener from Bournemouth carrying out his business by bike.

Dominic Goldup, who runs Alumhurst Gardening Services, is on a mission to show bikes can be largely used to replace diesel vans in a bid to help protect the environment.

His independent gardening business offers professional horticultural services, tree surgery, site and waste clearance and other garden services.

Recently, Dominic bought an electric cargo bike that was partially funded through the help of BCP Council and secured a £5,000 grant to help the conurbation with decarbonisation.

He said: “I qualified at Kingston Maurward College and undertook an apprenticeship with BCP Council housing, which gave me the onsite training.

"It’s great to be able to connect with nature, get satisfaction and gratitude personally from customers, and help to improve my mental health.

“The aim of this service is to build a strong business case that demonstrates that electric cargo bikes can largely replace current diesel vans for current service-based garden operations and reduce diesel van miles I aim to enable them to operate more efficiently and in an environmentally friendly manner improving air quality.

“Reducing greenhouse gas emissions and saving time during busy periods on the road network. Bikes also provide a healthy travel option for employees and subcontractors."

Dominic is also raising awareness for cyclists on Bournemouth's busy roads.

He added: “From being on the road for many years I know some cyclists can have a bad name, but we are not all the same. We are mindful of other road users and obey all the rules. I have noticed that people are extremely impatient, and they simply do not care about cyclists.

“They want to get to their destination as quickly as possible nine times out of 10 we will have a near miss on the roads every day due to this matter.
