IF THERE ever was a spot to break down in the middle of nowhere near Romsey, it is at a little-known cafe.

Coffee Corner is about five minutes outside of the Test Valley town, on the edge of the New Forest, on the Chatmohr Estate.

It was found completely by accident by a reporter looking for a safe refuge after a worrying warning light flickered on the dashboard of his car.

The croque monsieur was a special and it came with a little salad drizzled with balsamic glaze (Image: Charles Elliman)Follow the narrow lane away from the A36 and the hidden coffee shop is in a refurbished industrial unit.

It is not just a place to wait for the AA to turn up and if you seek you will find a wealth of homemade cakes, hot food and coffee.

The decor is stylish and very much in the mode of Valentine's, although the only date I had to look forward to was one with an iconic yellow van and its driver, Keith.

It was lunchtime but it is clear the cafe serves breakfast and, if you are looking for something hearty, there are substantial meals on offer, judging from the menu.

There is the Coffee Corner Breakfast, the house's take on the full English which comes in at £11, the Crispy Halloumi Stack, for those who are vegetarian and there is a homemade beef burger.

There are also specials on offer and I opted for a croque monsieur.

To wash it down I ordered a cup of coffee, an Americano with a dash of milk and something sweet, a slice of coffee cake, to take the edge off the bechamel sauce-filled French toastie.

If you have read my reviews before you will know I do not like cake so it was a sacrifice I made for you but I enjoyed it.

All in all the damage was a fraction of what I am going to be paying to mend my car and the bill came to just £10.94.

I was also given an extra coffee too, by the friendly staff who let me stay for as long as I wanted until my partner drove from Andover to pick me up.

Will I be going back? Yes. Next time I will be going for the burger.

Coffee Corner is open 8.30am to 4pm, Monday to Friday and 9.30am to 3pm on Saturdays at Unit 10-12 Chatmohr Estate, Crawley Hill, Romsey, SO51 6AP.
