People living in council housing in Fareham will see their rent hiked by the maximum amount.

It comes as councillors agreed to push ahead with plans to increase rent for council homes and garages by 2.7 per cent.

At an executive meeting of Fareham Borough Council, councillors agreed to recommend that full council agrees to the new charges when it next meets on February 14.

The proposed 2.7 per cent increases for 2025/26 council homes for social, affordable and shared ownership rents and garages will start from April 1, 2025. Rent rises are capped by the consumer price index (1.7 per cent) plus 1 per cent.

According to council documents, the average rental across nearly 2,500 council houses will be £123.93 per week from April 1, if the rise is approved.

This varies from a one-bedroom flat at Rose Court going up by £2.75 per week to £104.54, to a four-bedroom house at Jubilee Court increasing by £3.98 to £151.21.

Garage fees are not covered by the 2.7 per cent cap, but the principal has been applied, said the council report. It means rents will go up from £15.75 to £16.18.

Other housing fees and charges have been set at the maximum allowed by the government, said council documents. House charge repairs are set to rise by 3.4 per cent from £58 to £60 per visit from a tradesman. In sheltered accommodation for the elderly, guest room charges will rise by 9.4 percent, or 9.5 percent for a couple. Other charges are for key fobs and keys again up by 2.5 and 2.4 percent respectively, from £6.30 to £6.45.
