An investigation is underway into racism after a Ukip rally met with anti-racists at the Bargate.

A 15-year-old boy from Southampton was arrested at a planned Ukip anti-immigration rally when it was met by scores of anti-racist protesterrs, with both groups marching through the city centre on January 25.

A heavy police presence kept the two groups separate after some scuffles on Bargate Street, with Hampshire police confirming to the Echo that a boy was handcuffed.

Police called in reinforcements as the protests heated up, with officers rushing over from The Walls to keep the groups apart.Police called in reinforcements as the protests heated up, with officers rushing over from The Walls to keep the groups apart. He was then de-arrested a short time later and taken home by officers.

Police confirmed that this incident remains under investigation and that follow-up work will be done with the boy and his parents/guardians.

As the protests in front of the Bargate continued, a bottled drink was thrown at a bus driving towards Westquay stops.

The protests were otherwise peaceful, and Ukip leader Nick Tenconi's megaphone speeches were met by the counter rally's chants of 'there are many, many more of us than you.'
