A man has lost a bid to build a new home in Marchwood at appeal.
Simon Bailey's proposal for a detached house on land next to Cracknore Cottage, in Cracknore Hard Lane in Marchwood, was first turned down by the New Forest District Council.
He took this to appeal but the Planning Inspectorate agreed with the council's decision, citing concerns about the impact on the area's "character and appearance."
The inspector said the proposed house would appear as an "incongruous feature" due to its narrow width and limited gaps between neighbouring properties.
The decision notice said: "Because of the narrow width of the proposed dwelling, and the very limited gaps either side, it is inevitable that it would appear as a contrived development that would give the impression of having been squeezed into a confined space."
The inspector did not find that the new dwelling would harm the living conditions of neighbours.
In a ruling, the inspector added: "Unreasonable behaviour resulting in unnecessary or wasted expense has not occurred and an award of costs is not warranted."
