On the corner of Cheriton Avenue and Minstead Avenue, in the heart of the Harefield Housing Estate, stood a beloved local landmark - the Hare and Hounds pub.

Built by Eldridge Pope brewery, this establishment first welcomed patrons on December 2, 1963, with Fred Dines serving as its original landlord.

For more than five decades, the Harefield pub was a hub of community life, a place where neighbours gathered to share stories, laughter, and the occasional pint.

Sadly, like many other traditional pubs, The Hare and Hounds faced changing times and closed its doors in late September 2016.

Despite efforts by Southampton City Council to find a new owner and keep it alive as a pub, no one came forward to take on the challenge.

The once-vibrant building was eventually demolished in the third week of January 2018, leaving a void in the neighbourhood and bittersweet memories for those who once called it their local.
