A University student died after drinking a mixture of spirits during an alcohol-fuelled game at a party, an inquest has heard.
Daniel Muzamba, 19, originally from Totton, was found dead on April 2, 2022, by his flatmates at West Downs Student Village in Winchester.
The night before his death, Mr Muzamba had taken part in “shot pong”, a game which involved him and his friends drinking a cocktail of gin, rum, Disaronno, peach snaps, beer and wine.
Speaking at Winchester Coroner’s Court on January 30, student Ben Tharle described how he, his girlfriend and another friend helped put Mr Muzamba to bed on the night of April 1 after the festivities.
He said that their friend, who was “10 out of 10 drunk” fell five times, hitting his head “really hard”. The inquest also heard how the University of Winchester student’s blood alcohol level was found to be 4.6 times the normal driving limit, a level which has been associated with fatalities.

Describing the last time Mr Mazumba was seen alive, Mr Tharle said: “I remember all three of us decided that we needed to put him away. He fell over and then turned around and put himself against the bed. We were in the room talking to him. After a while, we helped him get into bed and he seemed to go very quietly to sleep. In hindsight, we should never have done that – we should have called an ambulance.”
In tears, Mr Tharle described coming across his friend at around 3pm the following day: “He had foam coming out of the side of his mouth,” he said. “He was cold to the touch – so cold.”
The inquest also heard how two of Mr Muzamba’s fellow students used his phone to take selfies in the kitchen before his body was found.
Mr Muzamba’s family, of Northlands Road, Totton, cast doubt on Mr Tharle’s account of events, with his mother calling for further investigation by the police into her son’s death.
Sefton Kwasnik, representing the family, argued there should be further inquiry into how and why the selfies were taken, although the police said there wasn’t “any evidence that there was third-party involvement” in the death.

In a statement read out by senior coroner Christopher Wilkinson, Mr Muzamba’s mother said: “They woke up the following morning but they did not bother checking on him until three in the afternoon. They were taking selfies with his phone.
“Were they not supposed to call an ambulance if there was nothing they were hiding? Why did they keep Danny’s phone away from him? Was it because they did not want Danny to call for help? Danny is always with his phone.”
She added: “The life of a young man is lost. Our hearts will be forever broken.”
The coroner has adjourned the inquest until a later date to allow Mr Muzamba's family members to consider their position.
