Moorlands Primary School has been rated as 'Good' in all areas following an Ofsted inspection.
The school, located on Kesteven Way, Bitterne, received the rating after inspectors visited on December 10 and 11, 2024.
The report highlighted the school’s ambitious curriculum, which is logically sequenced for pupils from reception to Year 6.
Teachers are well-equipped to deliver the curriculum, and pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) have their needs accurately identified.
The school has also prioritised reading, selecting a diverse range of high-quality texts that link to topics across the curriculum.
Children begin learning phonics as soon as they start in reception, and checks are made on pupils’ progress through the phonics programme.
Pupils who fall behind are supported by staff to catch up, resulting in most pupils learning to read fluently and confidently.
Inspectors noted that behaviour throughout the school is positive, with pupils showing consideration for their peers.
However, they also noted that while most pupils attend well, a small proportion are persistently absent.
The school has been advised to raise expectations to ensure regular attendance is a priority for all pupils.
Personal development was highlighted as a strength, with the school providing opportunities that pupils may not otherwise receive, such as educational visits and community events.
The PSHE curriculum teaches pupils how to lead safe, healthy lifestyles, with visitors such as the police and fire service enhancing pupils’ learning.
The school’s leadership was praised, with leaders at all levels aligned to the school’s vision.
Governors have an accurate view of the school and a clear vision for future priorities.
Staff were noted to value leaders’ work to support their workload and well-being.
The school has been advised to improve the way it checks pupils’ understanding in some subjects and improve its attendance records.
