January marks Walk Your Dog Month, promoting outdoor activity with pets.
Expert dog trainer Jeanette Muldoon from The Family Dog Club has provided advice for pet owners, focusing on the physical and mental health benefits of daily walks for dogs.
Regular exercise helps maintain a healthy weight, strengthens muscles, and supports cardiovascular health.
Dogs also benefit from the mental stimulation of exploring new environments.
However, Muldoon advises tailoring walks to each dog's needs and preferences, with alternatives like short "sniffaris" or interactive play for those who cannot walk daily.

She also advises on recognising signs of stress in dogs during walks, such as hypervigilance or pulling to return home.
For rescued dogs, a "decompression" period is recommended to help them adjust to their new environment.
The importance of avoiding "trigger stacking," where a series of stressors build up, is also highlighted.
Dog owners are encouraged to seek help from a qualified behaviourist if their pet consistently shows signs of stress during walks.
