A man died last night after being run over in a supermarket car park in Gosport, Hampshire police confirmed.

Around 5.45pm, it was reported to police that a blue Volkswagen Passat had hit a 69-year-old pedestrian in the car park of the Asda store on Dock Road.

Members of the public helped the man out from under the car but the man, from Gosport, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police closed Dock Road as fire and ambulance services attended, and then shut the car park while officers investigated the incident.

Both the car park and road are now re-open.

The Asda store remained open despite access to the car park being restricted.

Police said: "As part of our enquiries, officers remain keen to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident or moments leading up to the collision, in particular anyone who has any dash cam or other footage.

"Anyone with information should call 101, quoting the reference 44250015030."
