More than 1,000 business founders in Hampshire have received £25 million in loans from a government-backed programme.

Start Up Loans announced that since the scheme's inception in 2012, the funds have been distributed through various partners across the region.

The initiative, aimed at fostering entrepreneurship, has seen over 12,200 budding business owners across the South East take advantage of the financial support, amounting to more than £130 million in total.

When it comes to the value of finance provided, the top three constituencies are Portsmouth South, Southampton Itchen, and Portsmouth North.

The programme has also been a boon for female entrepreneurs in Hampshire, who received 37 per cent of the total loans issued.

This figure surpasses the overall level of female business ownership in the broader business population.

One notable success story is Sam Hopkins, who founded New Forest Skate Hub.

Based at Bartley Skatepark in Totton, Southampton, Sam offers skateboarding coaching to children and adults of all abilities, fostering confidence, inclusion, and community spirit.

Sam Hopkins, founder of New Forest Skate Hub, said: "Turning my love for skateboarding into my work has been incredibly rewarding. There’s nothing quite like helping others to overcome challenges, grow and reach their goals. Providing a safe space for individuals to express themselves by freedom in movement but most importantly having fun whilst doing it.

"It’s not all about the tricks but knowing how rewarding it is mentally, physically and socially. I support anyone who seeks the competitive side of the sport and watching one of my students go on to compete has been a particular highlight for me. The finance and support were vital to me being able to purchase the necessary equipment to turn my passion into a business."

The Start Up Loans programme has recently released its Essential Guide to Starting a Business, aimed at first-time business owners.

A guide to marketing is also expected to be launched soon.
