There have been countless occasions where I have ended a night out with a kebab and almost immediately regretted it.
Sometimes you may not remember spending the £8 you see pop up on the bank statement, but you certainly always feel the aftermath in your stomach the next day.
Prices at local kebab shops are only rising too, and that might be why the ‘Mad Jan’ promotion at German Doner Kebab caught my eye.
I had never tried the premium chain before, but between January 6 and 30, the price of all main dishes has been slashed down from £8.49 to £5.99.
You understand why German Doner Kebab is considered ‘premium’ as soon as you walk in the Southampton store, with the bright oranges of the décor popping and the smell of fresh meat hitting the nose straight away.

The heavier lamb meat is gone for succulent beef or chicken, which does not carry or absorb as much grease and feels a lot easier to stomach.
That does not mean you will not get your hands dirty though, as a bespoke wipe is provided and a fork is included to mop up the bits that fall out of the jam-packed kebab.
I went for an ‘OG Kebab’ – a mixture of the meats with tomatoes, pickled red cabbage, lettuce and onions inside a thick ‘waffle’ pita.
That menu option typically comes with three sauces – spicy, yoghurt and garlic – which are all fantastic and come in pourable pots to lather onto the unique bread.
The kebab was full to the brim with meat and yet was not greasy at all, with the salad packing colour into every bite, and the mixture of meats keeping it fresh throughout.

The beef in particular was juicy and I could have eaten it all day – it was a fantastic main that was light in both the stomach and the wallet.
For an extra £2.99, the mains come with fries or hash browns bites and a drink too.
Straws are provided with the drink cans, and this felt like a lovely touch, something that would definitely be missed in a typical kebab shop.
There are different choices for seasoning on the fries, including curry and cheesy, but I went with a spicy portion that brought on a bit of a sweat.
The ‘bubble’ bread has lived rent free in my mind since my visit, as the wrap was so unique and kept its structure despite the massive fillings.
It might just be the first kebab that I have ever that did not leave me lying in bed regretting my life decisions.
