The New Forest has been coated in snow while flurries of flakes were seen in Southampton.

The Met Office put in place a yellow weather warning for snow at 9am, forecasting light rain and sleet showered throughout the day.

But in the afternoon, areas of the New Forest saw scattered snowflakes in the sky.

A video taken in Hordle by @JoshuaPressLDN showed flakes flying across the camera, but the snow did not appear to set, likely due to the rain that had made the ground sodden throughout the day.

Heavier snow soon followed elsewhere in the forest, as it settled in areas and made for some amazing photos from Daily Echo Camera Club member Hang Ross.

Hang caught horses galloping around while getting covered in the snow, and braved the cold to show how well the flakes had laid.

More persisent snow was also seen in Brockenhurst, where Wilverley Inclosure was covered in snow around 3.30pm.

Scattered flakes also hit roads in Hedge End.

In Southampton city centre, shoppers were covered in sleet, but it ended up being more like rain than snow with just a little bit of snow mixed in.

Commenters on Facebook also said that they had also seen sleet further out in Romsey.

The Met Office are keeping its yellow weather warning for snow in place until midnight, suggesting that there could be disruption to travel and slippery untreated surfaces through the night and Thursday morning.

The weather experts warned that there could be 'possible travel delays on roads stranding some vehicles and passengers,' possible delays 'or cancellations' to rail travel and potential power cuts or dips in mobile phone service.

An Amber Cold Health Alert across the South-East remains in effect until 12.00pm on Sunday, which means that the health service is likely to feel an impact from the cold weather.

University Hospital Southampton has cancelled a small number of appointments as more than 400 people have been attending the emergency department daily.

Though day case and routine appointments are going ahead as normal at the hospital, staff are dealing with a high number of patients with flu and respiratory illnesses – more than 100 in total – following a spike in the number of people suffering with cold and flu-like symptoms.

Other places in the south are seeing the worst of the snow, as the Met Office issued a stronger amber warning in Cornwall, Devon, Dorset and Somerset.
