Hampshire and Isle of Wight hospitals are urging people to use services appropriately amid a surge in patients.

Hampshire Hospitals, which manages Basingstoke and Winchester hospitals, previously declared a critical incident due to "sustained pressures."

This comes as the region deals with a high volume of flu and other winter-related illnesses.

All NHS organisations in the area are collaborating to maintain care standards as the public is reminded to use services wisely.

People are encouraged to get vaccinated against flu and COVID-19 if eligible.

Vaccination appointments can be arranged through the NHS app, GPs, local pharmacies or by calling 119.

Emergency departments and 999 services are overwhelmed and should be reserved for emergencies only.

Pharmacies and Urgent Treatment Centres can handle minor ailments and injuries.

The NHS 111 service should be the first point of contact for non-life-threatening urgent care.

Minor injuries and illnesses can be treated more swiftly at an urgent treatment centre.

Dr Lara Alloway, chief medical officer, NHS Hampshire and Isle of Wight, said: "Across the local NHS, we are doing everything possible to make sure people continue to get the care they need at this very busy time.

"We are seeing very high numbers of people needing hospital care and this does mean that some people may have to wait longer than we would like to access some services.

"It is very important people help us to help you by using appropriate services if you do need support, treatment and care."

The report mentions that these centres are located in Andover, Gosport, Lymington, Petersfield, Portsmouth, Southampton, and the Isle of Wight.

Pharmacies are described as "highly qualified" for minor health concerns.

The NHS 111 mental health triage team offers round-the-clock mental health support.

People are also advised to use online GP services for non-urgent issues.

Keeping a stock of everyday medications at home can help with minor ailments.

Lastly, the report states that if a loved one is discharged from hospital, it is important to pick them up promptly to free up the bed for someone else.
