A developer has submitted plans to provide up to 200 homes and 46 acres of public open space between two New Forest villages.

The award-winning Wates Developments has drawn up proposals to transform 60 acres of farmland that separates Blackfield and Holbury.

Lynwood Farm was run by two brothers, John and George Orman, who owned a large collection of vintage farm machinery including tractors and engines.

Neither of the brothers married and following their deaths the collection was auctioned in 2018.

The proposed new homes, scores of which will be affordable, will be built behind houses on the southern side of Rollestone Road.

But Wates says the area of open space will occupy 70 per cent of the site. It will include biodiversity enhancement areas such as new native woodland to complement the New Forest Special Protection Area, plus "children’s play fields", a community orchard and allotments.

Wates is planning to provide a mix of house types, sizes, and tenures to meet local housing need.

The development will incorporate a raft of eco-friendly measures including Net Zero Carbon-ready housing, EV charging, solar panels and a car club.

An application has been submitted to New Forest District Council following a public consultation carried out last year.

A Wates spokesperson said: "We would like to thank all members of the local community who have been in touch with us over the summer and provided us with us over the summer and provided us with feedback on our initial plans.

"It has helped us improve our evolving proposals and, should they be approved, it will result in a beautiful new development where a wide variety of people will be able to find a suitable place to live.

"There is a pressing need for new housing in the New Forest district since not nearly enough homes have been delivered here over recent years.

"This site represents a unique opportunity for a much-needed, attractive and sustainable development in an excellent location close to local amenities and facilities.

"We look forward to working with the council, consultees and the local community to bring the best possible project to fruition."

Wates says the council is likely to determine the application in the first half of 2025.

Meanwhile, Pennyfarthing Homes is drawing up plans to build 170 homes on land north of Manor Road in Milford-on-Sea.

People living in the area have been consulted about the the proposed development, which will comprise a mix of one to five-bedroom properties. About 85 of the homes will be affordable.
