An arrest has been made after a man scaled a multi-storey car park in a near three-hour stand-off with police.

Emergency services descended on East Street car park today following a police chase.

The man, from London, tried to evade officers by climbing the building but could only reach the first floor.

The neighbouring road Back of the Walls was partially cordoned off as the man and firefighters carrying a ladder, went back and forth along the length of the building.

After more than two hours, the man eventually climbed down and was swiftly arrested.

A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary later confirmed the man was wanted in connection with a break-in at vegan restaurant Kesarum earlier today.

A spokesperson for the force said: “Officers were deployed - alongside our colleagues from South Central Ambulance Service and Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service - to ensure the safety of the man and members of the public.

“A 30-year-old man from London has now been arrested on suspicion of burglary and remains in police custody at the current time.

“Officers remain in the area conducting enquiries.”

The cordon was manned by several police officers, alongside paramedics and firefighters.

At the height of the incident, approximately 10 emergency vehicles were at the scene.

Pedestrians and motorists could still access the car park and the road was reopened shortly before midday.
