Hit BBC show Gavin and Stacey has featured Southampton in the plot of the long-running TV comedy’s finale.

The whole cast - Bryn (Rob Brydon), Gwen (Melanie Walters), Jason (Robert Wilfort), Smithy (James Corden), Gavin (Mathew Horne), Stacey (Joanna Page), Nessa (Ruth Jones), Mick (Larry Lamb), Pam (Alison Steadman), Pete (Adrian Scarborough), and Dawn (Julia Davis) - returned to the small screen today.

And the plot - which we’ll keep light on detail for anyone who has not seen the show yet - features the show’s version of Southampton port, with operator ABP’s signs shown on screen.

There are plenty of references to Southampton - although you may not quite recognise the show’s version of the city.

One viewer posted a shocked picture on social media and said: “Me, in Southampton, hearing all the Southampton references.”

Another X user said: “#GavinandStacey finale was just sheer perfection (glossing over the "Southampton" docks location) 😆”

A third said: “Who knew my city Southampton, would get a mention in #GavinAndStacey 😍😍🙌 awesome ending ❤️”

Another added: “Average #GavinAndStacey episode at best.

“They had the chance to save it at the end by featuring gods city of Southampton but blew it by filming it elsewhere and pretending.”

The series, written by Corden and Jones, originally aired between 2007 and 2010, and returned in 2019 for a special that scored the highest overnight Christmas ratings in 12 years.

It also won the impact award at the National Television Awards (NTAs) in 2020.

The documentary Gavin And Stacey: A Fond Farewell will be shown at 7pm on New Year’s Day on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
