Residents have slammed inconsiderate e-scooter riders who have left pavements near their homes in a mess.

Locals in Shirley have called out users of the peach-coloured electric-powered scooters for dumping them on the side of the road near the docking station on Hill Lane, rather than placing them inside.

Photos from the dock show the e-scooters messily discarded near the dock, partially blocking the pavement, with some outside the marked parking bay.

The Voi scooters have been labelled a "nuisance" by one neighbour and Voi, the scheme's operator has warned riders that inconsiderate parking is "never acceptable".

Southampton City Council introduced the city-wide rental scheme for e-scooters on the go – through electric vehicle company, Voi – in 2021.

It allows people over the age of 16 to hop on and off an e-scooter or e-bike at a selection of docking stations across the city.

“I get people need to move around and riding an e-scooter might be a quick and affordable way of doing so but the rider has a responsibility to be mindful of traffic and considerate to others.

“I've seen examples of that not being the case as they go at quite a speed. I would hope the scooters are parked the way in which they're supposed to be."

Colin Baxter added: “I think most people are sensible, but you'll always get one or two that break the rules.

“If there's a set of instructions then they're there for a reason. The last thing anyone needs is not being able to get by on the pavement because the road is blocked, so I can see why that's an issue."

Shirley ward councillor George Percival said he has had to report badly parked scooters to Voi previously.

"Each scooter has a unique licence plate, and Voi can track the last user, so they need to crack down on poor behaviour," the councillor said.

"If they can’t address this, the trial should end. Issues like this reflect a wider problem of insufficient enforcement. From cars parking on pavements to littering and vandalism, a lack of policing of minor issues only encourages more of the same."

In a statement, a spokesperson for Voi said: “Inconsiderate parking is never acceptable.

“While the vast majority of our e-scooter and e-bike riders in Southampton follow the rules, we take action against those who don’t - including fines and potential bans.

“Thousands of people choose e-scooters and e-bikes every day to get to work and education, and we want our service to work for everyone – whether customers or not.

“We’re grateful the residents raised the issue and always appreciate community feedback regarding our scheme in Southampton.

“We urge anyone who spots a poorly parked Voi vehicle to report it to us with details of location, time and the vehicle’s four-digit-number to report.voi.com or email support@voi.com so we can investigate.”
