Nicholas Sharp has handed over a series of “Meteorite Landings” by the Turner-prize nominated Cornelia Parker, which were made by heating a 400-year-old iron meteorite until glowing hot and then using it to burn maps of different locations.
Long-time supporter of the gallery Louise Hallett also donated a painting by Juliette Losq and etchings by Ibrahim El-Salahi, a Sudanese artist.
Councillor Lorna Fielker, leader of Southampton City Council said: “I am very excited by the latest unveiling of works at Southampton City Art Gallery and incredibly grateful to the generous donors.
“Art brings people together and it plays a huge role in people’s mental well-being and education. Our gallery puts Southampton on the map and is instrumental in our city’s culture.”
