The Lord Mayor of Southampton has declared there are too many takeaways in Shirley as an application is submitted to see another on the suburb's high street.
Cllr Dave Shields said he had received a number of complaints from residents about the number of fast food restaurants in the area.
It comes after Cllr Shields, who is a ward councillor in nearby Freemantle, objected to a planning application to turn a former motorcycle showroom into a new takeaway restaurant.
He added: “The community has a huge range of food from fish and chips to pizza places – adding another takeaway here would be of no benefit to the community.
“Just next store to the building is What A Pizza which I understand has done well since opening and despite being a restaurant also does deliveries.
“Shirley is a great community, has so much character and I don’t want to see it diminished with constant planning applications.”
Previously the building was a Yamaha Parkroad Motorcycles store and a florist before that.

If the plans are given the green light by the council, a new takeaway would be brought onto the busy stretch of road near Foyes Corner as well as a number of flats above.
Cllr Shields continued: “The Shirley residents don’t want to see it, I don’t want to see it – the area is already well served by a huge number of different takeaways, fast food places and restaurants.
“That is why I have lodged an objection and will be urging the planning committee not to let this development go ahead.
“The building, 156 Shirley Road, has been under development for around 18 months and I’m told there are issues with asbestos.”
Plans were approved in December 2021 for the former motorcycle shop to be partly demolished in order to make way for new homes – but these plans never took off.
Planning permission to turn the top floor of the building into two flats was previously approved with the promise of keeping the ground floor for a shop, café or restaurant.
