A historic Wembley win, flying hornets, and the Northern Lights across the night sky were all across the top of the news agenda in May this year.

On May 26, Southampton FC defeated Leeds United 1-0 at Wembley Stadium to win the Football League Championship Playoff Final.

Adam Armstrong’s first half goal returned Southampton to the topflight of English football after a one-year absence from the Premier League.

Saints captain Jack Stephens told the Echo “drinks, more drinks, and a few more drinks” would be on that night’s agenda as he lifted the playoff trophy under the famous Wembley arch.

Before Saints sealed their return to the Premier League, Southampton Airport announced passengers could fly from the city to Bergerac and Majorca with British Airways – two of the latest summer destinations.

However, at home residents were snapping photos of the Northern Lights that could be seen in the skies of Southampton, in a very rare phenomenon.

This was due to one of the strongest geomagnetic storms for years hitting Earth.

A Southampton-based cruise ship set off for the high seas after a deep clean, following several incidents of passengers falling ill with norovirus.

Ventura departed for a cruise of the Canary Islands after the port health officer inspected the ship.

Elsewhere, a pensioner vowed he would not pay a £125 parking fine he received after parking in a Tesco car park.

Jon Windeatt claimed he never stayed in the car park for no more than 30 minutes.

Outside The White Swan pub in Mansbridge traffic came to a standstill as a car flipped onto its roof.

Police said minor injuries were reported following the crash.

Meanwhile Southampton City Council said they were waiting for “gaps” in information to be addressed over government plans to simplify bin collections.

Defra said simpler recycling collections will see the same materials collected from homes, workplaces and schools.

Large hornets were spotted in Hampshire, with one resident picturing the wasp in their home in Romsey.

Though there were a spike in sightings across the county, the European hornet remains an endangered species.

Police arrested a 22-year-old man from Fareham following a two-vehicle crash on Bitterne Road West.

He was arrested on suspicion of “driving a motor vehicle with a proportion of a specified controlled drug above the specified limit.”
