A busy road plagued with delays has finally been reopened fully for the first time in a year, two months later than originally planned.

A landslip in December 2023 forced the westbound lane of St Denys Road to close to accommodate pedestrians after a large chunk of pavement collapsed.

This lane closure was put in place right near a key junction with Thomas Lewis Way.

No repair works actually started until October 2024, and the eastbound lane had to close to accommodate these too, with works set to be completed by October 27.

But the discovery of "potentially live unknown cables" forced work to stop for weeks, delaying the reopening by a further two months as Southampton City Council provided a provisional completion date of December 15.

By December 1, one lane was opened westbound with two lanes available for eastbound travel.

Today, Southampton City Council finally confirmed on social media that the all lanes on the road had reopened in both directions around 3pm.

The @scchighways X account said: "The parties carrying out repairs on St Denys Road rail bridge have advised us that they have now successfully completed their works.

"The site is being cleared and we have been advised that the road will be fully open by 3pm today.

"We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for the support given to this much needed project and fully appreciate the patience and understanding of all the residents and users of this road."
