A prisoner from Southampton handed a life sentence after throwing a jug of boiling water over an inmate and slashing his throat said: "It had to be done."
Jack McRae, 32, threw the jug over victim Alexander Prosser’s face and slashed the man with a knife made out of a toothbrush and melted razor blades.
As reported, the incident occurred at HMP Albany on the Isle of Wight on October 14, 2022.
Now the Echo can reveal more details about the incident from the judge's sentencing remarks following the life sentence with 14-year minimum term imposed on November 22.

McRae filled a small jug with boiling water and threw it at Prosser, then climbed on top of him after the latter screamed.
A member of staff pulled McRae away, who said “it had to be done, it had to be done” as he was being dragged away.
While McRae was being searched after the incident, he told staff: “I am in this prison for something I did not do. I lost my appeal.
“Therefore I picked the biggest paedophile on the wing and wanted to kill him. At least then I am in prison for something I did do.”
Prosser was found lying on his bed and bleeding profusely after being across the throat in two areas.
His face was red from boiling water and he was taken to hospital.
Prosser had three wounds, with one on the left front of his neck 13cm long and less than 5cm deep – he also had first degree burns to his face.
When interviewed by police, McRae called the events ‘a blur’ and said that he stopped slashing Prosser’s throat because he thought he was dead.

The two men had never had an altercation previously.
He was therefore charged with attempted murder and Judge Bowes KC sentenced McRae to life.
Sentencing, Judge Michael Bowes KC said: “Having considered all the matters before me, I am satisfied that there is a significant risk of you committing further specified offences and, coupled with that, a significant risk of your causing serious harm thereby.
“I am satisfied that your offence is so serious that a sentence of life imprisonment is required; and that is the sentence which I impose.”
McRae, 32, has 18 convictions for 47 offences, 20 of which are of a violent nature.
He was imprisoned for eight years in June 2022 for an offence of rape.
