Lloyds Bank has announced when its Shirley branch will close next year.

The bank confirmed the Shirley Road branch will close its doors for the final time on May 7, 2025, having previously stated 55 branches across the country would close in the new year.

News of the bank’s impending closure was met by criticism from customers, with Southampton Test MP, Satvir Kaur, setting up a petition which gained more than 400 signatures in an attempt to reverse Lloyds’ decision.

Reacting to the news of the bank’s closure date, the Southampton Test MP said she was “disappointed” by the news.

“I am really disappointed that Lloyds have announced a final date for closure,” said the former council leader.

“More than 400 people have signed my petition urging Lloyds to keep this vital branch open and they’ve ignored this.

It’s all been done behind closed doors and Shirley residents deserve better.”

She added: “This will greatly impact the most vulnerable residents who want to be able to access face-to-face services, as well as those independent businesses which are the lifeblood of Shirley high street.

“I have raised the issue in Parliament and will continue to do what I can on behalf of the many concerned residents who have contacted me about this.”

Lloyds Bank states 82 per cent of their customers use mobile, internet, or phone banking – as well as other branches.

The closure of the Shirley branch will mean customer’s nearest Lloyds Bank will be on Above Bar Street in Southampton city centre.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Lloyds said: “As many customers now choose to bank through their mobile app or online, visits to our Southampton Shirley branch have fallen over recent years.

“When the branch closes in May next year, customers can continue to manage their money online, by calling us, in person at Above Bar Street Southampton branch, or the local Post Office on the high street.”
