An oak tree at a popular children's play park has been ripped to the ground by Storm Darragh's strong winds.

Daily Echo Camera Club member Mark Harris posted photos on Facebook of an old oak tree next to Fleming Avenue playground in North Baddesley.

The inside of the tree's bark was exposed as it split at the stump and toppled onto the wet grass near the park.

"This oak tree has been in the park, for as long as I can remember.

"And now it's no longer going to be there. Sad times indeed."

Other people on social media commented on his post and said they had made memories around the tree.

Mark told the Echo how he is not surprised people have had unforgettable moments next to the tree, as it was a prominent feature in a play park used by so many.

Mark continued: "The Oak was situated in the play park for as long as I can remember, and I've lived in the village for about 50+ years, and can remember climbing it as all good school boys did back then.

"Many have used the park over the years, from the pre-school, having sports days, to dog walkers walking their pets.

"And in the last few months, I've even heard Tawny Owls, at night, after I had finished work.

"I have been on the lookout for more possible sightings/haunts to try and take pictures of them. So that's now not going to happen, either."

Mark hopes that his pictures can stir up more memories for those living in the area.

It is not the only tree to fall victim to the winds this weekend, as a charity's hall was damaged near Southampton Common and a tree on Shirley Avenue fell onto two vehicles.
