Commuters have been left ‘sick to the stomach’ after three in five trains departing Southampton Central were late over the last four weeks.

The busy city centre station played host to 8,357 services between November 6 and December 3 and 58 per cent of these were at least one minute late.

Only 3,092 left on time.

A whopping 1,337 services departed ten or more minutes late, accounting for 16 per cent of all journeys.

Vicky Warren commutes to Southampton from Bournemouth three days a week, and she said that she feels that trains are delayed ‘more often than not.’

Vicky said: “The anger I feel when I get to the train station and see those light up boards talking about delays, I get sick to the stomach.

“Even just a 10 minute delay turns a half hour journey into one that feels like an hour. I rush to the station and then it’s all for nothing because the train won’t be there for ages anyway.”

Their train to London Waterloo was due to leave at 8.30am and did not move until 8.53am.

They said: “We left super early in the morning so we weren’t late to the concert by any means but we wanted a full day in London.

“You pay all that money to get a train ticket up there so we wanted to be able to enjoy ourselves in London before the concert and get some food and get into the hotel.

“It taints the start of the day when you haven’t even left Southampton and you’re already 20 minutes behind schedule.”

South Western Railway (SWR) – which runs Southampton Central - apologised for recent delays in the Southampton area.

They told the Echo that the UK is now approaching the end of leaf fall season, which causes problems.

The train operator - set to be renationalised by the Government - said poor weather conditions, such as Storm Bert’s high winds, have blocked lines with fallen trees, flooding and cold temperatures.

SWR also said that instances of trespass on their network had a knock-on effect on its services.
