NHS services across Hampshire are seeing increased demand as winter months approach.

GP practices and hospitals are experiencing higher volumes of calls and admissions, mainly due to seasonal illnesses.

The NHS is working alongside partners to support those in need. To manage the extra demand, additional GP appointments are being offered.

Hospitals are also doing their best to treat patients promptly. Residents are being urged to help by following six steps to get 'winter strong'.

These include getting vaccinated if eligible, staying warm both indoors and outdoors, and planning ahead by stocking up on over-the-counter medicines and ensuring repeat prescriptions are filled in time for weekends and bank holidays.

Dr Lara Alloway, chief medical officer for NHS Hampshire and Isle of Wight said: "Winter is always a challenging time for all our health and care services, and this year is no different.

"The NHS will always be there for you when you need us, but there are some easy, essential things that everyone can do to help themselves, and the frontline teams who are working so hard. Knowing which service to access will help you get the right care, first time so if you’re not sure where to go for help use 111 online, Healthier Together or visit your local pharmacy."

People are also encouraged to stay active to boost mood and fitness, which can strengthen the immune system and reduce the risk of seasonal illnesses.

Residents are reminded to use NHS 111 for advice on the most appropriate service for their needs, and to keep an eye on vulnerable family members, friends, and neighbours.

The NHS also asks for support for those ready to be discharged from hospital.

More information on these steps can be found on relevant NHS websites.

The NHS said its priority remains patient safety.
