SIX YEARS have passed since Taunton Police Station relocated from Shuttern to Deane House.
The move, which took place back in 2016, marked the end of an era as officers left the historic site, which had a 250-year link with law enforcement in the town.
It was deemed too large and impractical after most offices moved to Bridgwater in September 2014.
The premises, originally part of a jail from the 1750s, needed significant investment.
Chief inspector Lisa Simpson, at the time of the move, said: "It will significantly improve our working environment and most importantly will maintain our policing presence in Taunton."
She acknowledged the sentiment attached to the old building but noted it was no longer efficient, highlighting the clear benefits of the co-location with Taunton Deane Borough Council at Deane House, allowing for a "one-stop-shop" for police and council services.
Police and crime commissioner Sue Mounstevens also praised the move, saying it saved money for residents and taxpayers while providing multiple services in a single location.
Council leader Cllr John Williams was enthusiastic about the improvements made to Deane House for energy efficiency and the better experience it provided for staff and customers.
He said: "We are looking forward to having the police join us in the building, where together we can offer local people greater convenience by having multiple services under one roof.
"And it guarantees a new police station remaining in Taunton for the foreseeable future."
The new station, which opened in 2016, has an enquiry desk operating from 8.30am to 4.30pm on weekdays.
It provides a flexible open-plan working space that can be adapted to future needs.
The move to Deane House symbolised a fresh chapter for Taunton Police Station, ensuring a continued presence in the town.
