Southampton’s last thrashing of Aston Villa came in 2015 when Saints emerged 6-0 victors after Sadio Mane scored the quickest hat-trick in Premier League history.

But Southampton's 5-0 thrashing of Aston Villa at The Dell on March 21, 1987, was a big moment in the 1986-87 First Division season. Villa, who were facing relegation, were left reeling from the defeat, while Southampton climbed up the table.

The Saints' goals came from Glenn Cockerill, Colin Clarke (2), Gordon Hobson, and Danny Wallace. 

The match was a memorable one for Southampton fans, who celebrated their team's emphatic victory over a top-flight rival. It was also a turning point in the season, as Villa never recovered from the defeat and eventually finished in last place.

The match was also notable for the fact that it was the last time that Southampton would win a league match by five or more goals for another 27 years. This came on October 2014 when Saints beat Sunderland at St Mary’s Stadium.
