A Hampshire church with links to the infamous HMS Bounty is seeking consent to transform a community facility.

The Rev Andy Norris has submitted an application to enlarge and modernise the parish centre opposite St Mary's Church in Green Road, Gosport.

One of the people buried in the churchyard is Captain George Miller Bligh, who died in Southampton in 1834.

After being badly wounded aboard HMS Victory during the Battle of Trafalgar he was taken below and was present at the death of Admiral Nelson.

Captain Bligh was related to Admiral William Bligh, who was in charge of HMS Bounty when the crew staged a mutiny in 1789.

If the application to upgrade the parish centre is approved, the single-storey complex will be enlarged and given a new look.

The main hall will be extended by 3.5m, creating new storage areas for chairs, tables, and other items of equipment.

Other proposals include a second hall on the eastern side of the site. The design of the new-look building will enable the halls t be used independently or together, giving greater flexibility.

A design and access statement that accompanies the application describes the front of the existing centre as "somewhat uninspiring".

It adds: "By creating a prominent, timber framed, porch, a softer, more welcoming and aesthetically pleasing elevation is created.

"New windows and doors are encircled with brick surround features which deliberately reflect some of the Regency and early Victorian styling to be found within the area."

A public notice outlining the scheme has been published by Gosport Borough Council, which will decide the application.
