Closing statements in a planning inquiry over a proposed redevelopment of former school playing fields will be submitted in writing.
The in-person hearings for the St Mary’s Independent School site appeal came to an end on Friday, November 15.
Planning inspector John Longmuir presided over eight days of evidence in the Council Chamber at the Civic Centre.
Sovereign Network Group (SNG) launched the appeal after members of Southampton City Council’s planning and rights of way panel refused the 84-home scheme.
The proposed development is made up of eight one-bed flats, 24 two-bed flats, 27 two-bed houses, 22 three-bed houses and three four-bed houses on the land that sits between Monastery Road, Beech Avenue and Cobden Crescent.
The inquiry heard that SNG would be able to provide a scheme that is 100 per cent affordable housing, with 42 social rented and 42 shared ownership homes.
More than 180 resident objections were made during the public consultation on the planning application.
On the opening day of the inquiry, inspector Mr Longmuir heard from a spokesperson for the St Mary’s Local Residents’ Opposition Group and Southampton Commons and Parks Protection Society, which opposed the scheme.
Evidence was given by witnesses on behalf of the SNG and the council on affordable housing and housing land supply in Southampton, the effect of the proposal on the character and appearance of the area and the impact of vehicle movements on the living conditions of neighbouring residents.
There were detailed discussions on the loss of the open space or sports playing pitches, with intense scrutiny of the council’s own policy documents in this area.
The inspector carried out a site visit on the morning of Friday, November 15.
Due to running out of time across the two weeks, the submissions from Christopher Young KC, representing SNG, and Rebecca Sage, on behalf of the council, will be made in writing.
The planning inspector confirmed these closing statements will be made available online for members of the public to access.
Ms Sage’s submissions will be provided by Wednesday, November 20, while Mr Young KC’s closing will be sent to Mr Longmuir by Friday, November 22.
The appellant is also making a written application for costs. A decision is due in the coming weeks.
