A quilt made by families and friends of people who have died by suicide will be displayed in Southampton this week.

The 'Speak Their Name' Suicide Memorial Quilt will be shown at Southampton City Art Gallery as part of a tour across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

The quilt, created by the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Suicide Prevention Network, is made up of individual squares, each honouring the memory of someone who has died.

The 'Speak Their Name' movement, which began in Greater Manchester in 2020, inspired this regional project.

The quilt will be on display at the gallery from November 19 to November 22.

A spokesperson for the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Suicide Prevention Network said: "Nothing can ever prepare anyone for the enormity of a loss by suicide and the pain that the bereaved feel is overwhelming, long-lasting and life-changing.

"We are humbled by the love and care that everyone who has created a square for our quilt has put into this project.

"By creating them we are both remembering, honouring and speaking the names of just some of the sadly too many.

"It was always our intention for this to be an ongoing and powerful artwork, touring public places around the region.

"We want the quilt to bring care and healing to those who have lost a loved one but also to provoke conversations, raise awareness and maybe bring some hope to those struggling themselves."
