A 35-mile diversion threatens to send traffic towards Fareham this weekend as a major Hampshire road is set to close.

The A3 will be shut between the Berelands Interchange and the A3M junction near Waterlooville at 9pm on October 25 to 6am on October 28.

These essential works will replace 4.5km of road surface and refresh worn road markings.

During this time, the road will be closed southbound and traffic will be diverted onto the A27 towards Cosham - sending motorists on a 35-mile diversion through the A272, A32 and A27 to eventually join back up with the A3M.

National Highways is already warning drivers to plan their journeys ahead of time but there is a chance that diverted traffic could have dispersed before it reaches Fareham, it said.

National Highways project manager Joe Caims said: “We understand the impact this may have on local communities but we plan our work carefully to try and minimise disruption, that's why we are carrying this work out over two weekends when traffic is at its lightest."
